Redefining geologists in-field experience
Context
Capture X is a geoscientific tool used in the field to capture and manage high-quality core imagery. It’s part of Seequent’s broader Imago suite and plays a critical role in helping geologists document and interpret geological data.
With growing adoption of the Imago suite across projects, it was essential that Capture X aligned with the rest of the platform—visually, functionally, and technically.
Problem
Despite its value, Capture X had major usability issues that hindered fieldwork:
Navigation was fragmented and unintuitive
Task flows were redundant or out of sync with actual field processes
The interface felt disconnected from the broader suite and lacked visual cohesion
As user expectations grew, these gaps slowed productivity and undermined trust in the product.
Objectives
Streamline navigation and make high-frequency tasks easier to complete
Align Capture X visually and functionally with the rest of the Imago suite
Create an intuitive interface that reflects the real-world workflow of geoscientists
Lay the groundwork for scalable improvements through design system integration
Research
To ground the redesign in user needs, I ran a series of in-person workshops with the product owner and product manager. These sessions:
Mapped current workflows and identified key friction points
Unpacked business priorities and technical constraints
Co-created rough concepts to explore possible solutions
This early alignment helped ensure the redesign balanced both user needs and product strategy.

Design
Working closely with a UI specialist, I:
Redesigned the navigation structure to improve feature accessibility and consistency across the suite
Optimised task flows to reflect how geologists work in the field
Applied Seequent’s design system and Material Design principles to ensure visual cohesion, accessibility, and usability
We created high-fidelity prototypes using Figma and iterated based on internal and user feedback.

Results
The redesigned Capture X delivered measurable improvements in usability and consistency. Feedback from users confirmed:
Clearer workflows and faster task completion
A more modern and accessible interface
Greater alignment with tools they use elsewhere in the suite
The adoption of the design system reduced development time and created a scalable foundation for future enhancements.
